A GIF transparent background lets the animation sit on any surface — dark websites, chat bubbles, video overlays — without a visible rectangle around it. How GIF Transparency Works
Unlike PNG, GIF transparency is binary: every pixel is either fully opaque or fully transparent. Each frame in a GIF is drawn from a palette of at most 256 colors, and one palette index can be flagged as "the transparent one". There is no such thing as 30% transparent in a GIF — a pixel is on or off.
Two more mechanics matter. First, disposal: GIF frames can be smaller than the canvas and tell the decoder what to do between frames — keep the previous pixels, restore the background, or restore the frame before. This tool honors all three while decoding, so overlapping partial frames composite correctly before keying. Second, because only one palette index is transparent, antialiased edges (pixels that are half blue subject, half white background) must pick a side — which is why naive removers leave halos and why the Matte option exists.
Preview on Light and Dark Backgrounds
A transparent GIF that looks perfect on white can look terrible on dark mode. Edge residue from the original background only shows against a contrasting color, which is why the workbench preview lets you flip between checkerboard, white, black, and a custom color that matches your actual target surface.

When to Use WebP or APNG Instead
If the destination is a modern website or app, WebP and APNG are strictly better formats: full 8-bit alpha means soft shadows and smooth edges, and WebP files are usually 30–70% smaller than the same animation as GIF. Both are supported by every current browser. Choose GIF when the target is a forum, email, older software, or anywhere you cannot verify modern format support — and make the edges forgiving with Shrink + Matte.

Why do transparent GIFs look pixelated at the edges?
GIF alpha is 1-bit — pixels are fully opaque or fully clear, so curves and diagonals stair-step. Shrink edge removes the worst ring; for genuinely smooth edges export WebP or APNG instead.
Will the transparent GIF keep its animation speed?
Yes. Frame delays are copied millisecond-for-millisecond and the loop count is preserved. Only pixel data changes.
My GIF has a gradient background — can it still be removed?
Color keying needs a flat-ish color, but you can add up to three key colors for multi-tone backdrops. For true gradients or photos, use the AI — any subject method.
Is there a limit on how many GIFs I can process?

Does it work in dark mode designs?
